How to Pick the Perfect Watermelon

How do you know when a melon is just right? Look for the Melon 1 label, of course!

The juiciest, ripest melons feel heavy in your hands, have a yellow belly, and sound hollow when you thump them.

Find the best in the bunch:

  • Choose firm, symmetrical watermelons
  • No soft spots or bruises
  • No cracks or mold
  • Dull rind (not shiny)
  • Dried stem
  • Buttery yellow underside
  • Has a “melon” scent
  • Sounds dull and hollow when thumped

Go Beyond the Picnic!

What can you do with a watermelon? Just about anything!
Keep it simple and add chunks of sweet watermelon to a salad, salsa, or cool drink. Blend a ripe Melon 1 watermelon into sherbet or sorbet, toss it on the grill (really!) or dip it in chocolate sauce. The possibilities are endless!

Vitamin A: gives your body an immunity boost and promotes eye health.

Vitamin B6: helps your body make disease-fighting antibodies, helps maintain normal nerve function, and forms red blood cells to help break down proteins. The more protein you eat, the more vitamin B6 you need!
